The set consists of 2 coins of 2 euro denomination.
The first coin is dedicated to the legend of King Charlemagne.
He was King of the Franks, Lombards, and Bavaria, and Emperor of the West in the late eighth and early ninth centuries. The founder of the Carolingian Empire, the “Father of Europe” (Pater Europae), for the first time after the fall of the Roman Empire, united most of Western and Central Europe. As sole ruler, he continued his father’s policy of protecting the papacy and became its sole protector, removing the Lombards from power in northern Italy and leading an invasion of Muslim Spain. He also campaigned against the Saxons in the east, converting them to Christianity (under threat of death), leading to events such as the massacre at Verdun. He reached the peak of his power in 800 when he was crowned Emperor of the Romans by Pope Leo III on Christmas Day in the old St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Charlemagne was venerated as a saint in the Holy Roman Empire and some other places after the twelfth century. His beatification has been recognized as a confirmed cult and is celebrated on 28 January.
The second coin is dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the currency agreement between Andorra and the EU. This allows Andorra to make the euro its official currency and issue euro coins from July 1, 2013.
Andorra did not have an official currency prior to the adoption of the euro, and unlike its two larger neighbors, France and Spain, which surround it, it is not a member of the EU. In the 20th century, both the French franc and the Spanish franc were used and accepted in Andorra. peseta.
