The cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) was chosen as the national flower of Estonia in 1968. The coin, dedicated to the national flower, depicts a stylized cornflower leaning towards the viewer in its natural environment, on the edge of a windy grain field. Cornflower petals form an eight-pointed star in the middle of the inflorescence, which is a very common ancient figure in Estonian folk ornamentation and symbolism, a well-known sign of good luck and a symbol of love.
