The coin is dedicated to the 550th anniversary of the Istropolitan Academy. Universitas Istropolitana in Bratislava may have been the third university in the Kingdom of Hungary and the first university founded in what is now Slovakia. Despite his brief existence (1465–1491), he occupies a prominent place in Slovak historiography. The word “Istropolitana” is taken from the ancient Greek name for Bratislava, Istropolis, which means “city of the Danube”.
