In 2021, the Paris Mint opens a new series based on literary styles and authors who have contributed to the history of literature in France and abroad.
On the occasion of the 700th anniversary of his death, the Paris Mint pays tribute to Dante Alighieri, the Italian poet, writer, thinker and politician. The obverse features a profile portrait of Dante Alighieri, the most famous Italian poet. His hat features three parts of the Divine Comedy: Hell, Purgatory and Paradise. As in the image of Botticelli, the author is crowned with a laurel – a symbol of glory. The Duomo and the coat of arms of Florence are also depicted to pay homage to his birthplace. His years of life and the name Dante Alighieri are shown around the coin. The year 2021 is engraved in the lower right corner.
The reverse side is common for the entire series “The Art of the Pen”. Several symbolic quotes are written on it, such as “Le mieux est l’ennemi du bien” by Voltaire, “Lasciate ogne speranza voi ch’intrate” by Dante Alighieri, “To be or not to be: that is the question” by William Shakespeare or “ Was micht umbringt, macht mich stärker ”Nietzsche. A feather is engraved in the center of the coin and under the name of the series. The abbreviation of the French Republic “RF” is engraved in the lower right corner of the coin, as well as the distinctive mark of the design author Joaquin Jimenez.
