This new collector’s coin commemorates the 500th anniversary of the first book in the Latvian language. Five centuries ago, the publication of this book marked the beginning of the Latvian people’s difficult but significant journey toward their language and national identity.
The obverse of the coin depicts a reader holding a book with the inscription “LATVIEŠU GRĀMATAI 500” on the cover. The year “2025” and the denomination “5 EURO” are also inscribed on the back.
The reverse depicts the history of the first Latvian book: from its printing in the printing house and loading into a barrel for transport to the opening of the barrel at the port and the burning of the confiscated copies. The year “1525” is inscribed in the upper left corner, and the inscription “PIRMĀS LATVIEŠU GRĀMATAS STĀSTS” appears along the edge.
