The tiger snake inhabits much of southern Australia and is known for its striking black and yellow stripes, however some tiger snakes do not have these striking markings. Dark stripes allow snakes to better absorb heat during their short growth period. When threatened, tiger snakes can become aggressive, and their bite releases toxic venom that can be fatal to humans.
Impressively, tiger snakes can swim and climb. They can stay underwater for up to nine minutes and have also been found up to 10 meters above the ground. They often inhabit aquatic areas, including dams, streams and swamps.
