- Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand dollar is the currency of exchange for daily transactions, while the government also allows legal tender coins in Niue dollar currency for collectible purposes.
A number of mints issue a large number of Niue-administered coins. Most of these are commemorative and collector’s editions with historical or general themes unrelated to Niue itself.
The “Crocodile and Shark” coin is the fourth and final coin in the Predators coin series, which depicts two marine predators – a great white shark and a saltwater crocodile.
The great white shark is probably the most famous and also the scariest sea creature in the world. This predator prefers mostly temperate coastal waters and has a jaw with up to 300 teeth in several rows. Just as deadly as everyone knows is the fearsome saltwater crocodile. It is the largest reptile on earth and can live up to 70 years. About half of the attacks of crocodiles on humans occur precisely by saltwater crocodiles. The crocodile prefers the tropical regions of Australia, Asia and the Pacific, but can also be observed far from land at sea.
The obverse of the coin depicts the head of Queen Elizabeth II.
