The Summer Olympics, to be held in Paris, is an opportunity for the Paris Mint to celebrate this major international competition with a series dedicated to sport, its values, athletes and the heritage of the host country. Following the conclusion of the Tokyo Olympics, 2021 officially marks the beginning of the countdown to the Paris Games. It is the handover of the Olympic flag during the closing ceremony of previous Games that marks the starting point of a new era for the Games in France. This transmission will be depicted in a series of coins and 2021 will be the first year of the quadrilogy.

The obverse of these coins features Marianne running over the Games track and field stadium. The Eiffel Tower is also visible in the background, symbolizing Paris.
