Although often referred to as a bear, koalas are not bears at all, they are marsupials. Koalas climb trees and have a pouch to carry their offspring, similar to kangaroos. An herbivore distinctly native to Australia, a koala eats plenty of eucalyptus leaves. Because this plant is normally toxic, koala’s bodies consume a large amount of energy to process it. This is why koalas often sleep throughout the day, and may only be awake for two hours total! Sadly, this animal is greatly affected by deforestation, wildfires, and the effects of climate change.
The 2022 reverse features a new koala design. This year, the koala is perched on the bough of a eucalyptus tree, dozing off peacefully.
