The Chesapeake Bay Tunnel Bridge is a system of six bridges, two tunnels, and four artificial fill islands linking mainland Virginia to the East Coast of the state on the Delmarwa Peninsula. The tunnel bridge was opened on April 15, 1964. In 1987 it was officially named Lucius J. Kellam Jr.

The reverse of the coin depicts the bridge in section. The obverse depicts the Statue of Liberty in profile with the words IN GOD WE TRUST and “$ 1”. Year of minting, mint mark and the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” are applied to the edge of the coins.
