Coin set – Fiji

7.00

The set consists of four Fijian coins in denominations of 5, 10, 20, and 50 cents. This is the last series of Fijian coins to feature the British monarch. Between 2011 and 2013, a currency reform took place, and the coin design was changed to feature national symbols, plants, and animals. This change reflects the country’s policy of distancing itself from its colonial past. The obsolete coins are still considered legal tender, though they are extremely rare.

The obverse of the coins features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The reverses are adorned with national symbols of Fiji: a sailing canoe (takia), a sperm whale tooth suspended from a chain made of braided sennit, magimagi (coconut fiber or pandanus), a throwing club (ula tava tava), and a lali, a traditional Fijian drum.
