His last words, “I leave you free from both men,” are believed to have become a symbol of the republic’s independence and the historical basis for its freedom from both the Pope and the Holy Roman Empire.
The coin features a portrait of Saint Marinus, based on a painting by Giovanni Battista Urbinelli. In his hand is the famous three-towered fortress complex of San Marino, located on Mount Titano.
