Since 2002, the euro has been the currency of 19 EU countries with a population of over 340 million and the second most important currency in the world. Euro coins and banknotes are a tangible everyday reminder of the freedom, ease of payment and the many opportunities that the European Union offers.
For example, the euro allows us to save and invest with confidence, compare prices and do business, as well as work, study or even retire abroad. After 20 years, it is almost forgotten that Belgian francs were once paid in Belgium and that one had to run to the bank to stock up on foreign currency before each trip.
The obverse shows the euro symbol against a background of binary numbers, surrounded by quotation marks and the inscription 20 YEARS EURO.
The sequence of numbers: 11100010 10000010 10101100 means “€”.
The quote below “PER ASPERA AD ASTRA” is from the honorary governor Jan Smets, at the time the European Commissioner responsible for the introduction of the euro in Belgium.
“Through difficulties to the stars” is still relevant and suitable for the introduction and use of the second largest currency in the world.
The stars and stripes are depicted on the right side of the design, inspired by the denomination of the Euro coins.
The path of the stars mentions the daily benefits of using the euro coin: work, study, retirement, travel, shopping, business.
The reverse shows the usual graphic elements such as the denomination, year and map of Europe. The final touch is the packaging of the coin card, inspired by the style of the euro.
