The coin commemorates the 40th anniversary of the International Charlemagne Prize awarded to the people of Luxembourg. This prestigious award is presented annually in the German city of Aachen for outstanding contributions to the development of European unity and integration. In 1986, the prize was awarded to the entire nation of Luxembourg in recognition of their special role in fostering European cooperation. Grand Duke Jean received the award on behalf of the country.
The obverse of the coin depicts a stylized medal of the International Charlemagne Prize. The reverse shows the face value.
