Bulgaria joined the European Union in 2007 and has been considering adopting the euro since 2010.
The new currency came into force on January 1, 2026.

The exchange rate between the euro and the Bulgarian lev is 1.95583 lev per 1 euro.

The 2 euro coin depicts Paisius of Hilandar, a Bulgarian hieromonk of the Constantinople Orthodox Church.
The 1 euro coin depicts John of Rila, a saint of the Orthodox Church and the most revered patron saint of the Bulgarian people.
The 50, 20, 10, 5 cents, 2 cents and 1 cent coins feature the Madara Horseman, an archaeological site dating to approximately 710 CE.
