2 euro Ireland 2026 – Presidency of the Council of the EU

The coin commemorates Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union, an important role held by member states in rotation, coordinating the work of the Council. It symbolizes Ireland’s commitment to European cooperation, strengthening dialogue between countries, and developing common initiatives within the European Union.

The obverse of the coin features the official logo of the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Its design is inspired by both the country’s scientific heritage – the spiral structure of the nebula, first observed using a telescope at Birr Castle – and ancient Irish ornamentation. The composition consists of spirals, each composed of 27 circles, symbolizing the member states of the European Union. A five-pointed star, a symbol of EU unity, forms the center of the design.
